Growing Fanfare for wind band was composed for the Ashford School Symphony Band in celebration of Ashford, Connecticut’s 300th anniversary. This pieces combines a lyrical, pentatonic melody with a rhythmic accompaniment. The piece was based on a tune called Growing Tall by one of the school’s fifth grade teachers, Bernie Schreiber.
“Thank You feels too small for the gifts Vincent has brought to our program! Growing Fanfare is a wonderful piece and the kids have LOVED working on it. When he came to work with the Symphony Band, the students were engaged and captivated by his playing and his words. It is so wonderful to have Vincent as a role model and inspiration for our young musicians, and we are grateful for all of his hard work.” – Amy Dotson, conductor of the Ashford School bands
Tribal Dances for wind band was composed for the North Branford (CT) Intermediate School 7th Grade Band. The piece encompasses three “tribal” dances of my own creation. In the first dance, I envision a ritual involving a large group, a mixture of mourning and celebration, perhaps marking the death of a war hero. The second dance switches gears to a more luscious feel, heavily featuring the tenor saxophone. To me, this dance feels like a lovers’ dance at a lake’s edge. Finally, the third section presents a fire dance based on the bass line of the first dance, beginning slow and building in intensity, just like a fire. This dance features the percussion section and the low winds/brass.
